ABOUT IIT BOMBAY
The Indian Institutes of Technology were setup after independence,
primarily to provide scientists and technologists of highest caliber who would
engage in research, design and development to help build the nation towards self-reliance.
IIT Bombay, is one of the five IITs, set up by an act of Parliament, was
established in 1958, at Powai, a northern suburb of Mumbai. Today this
institute is recognised as one of the centers of academic excellence.
At present,
undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs are offered in Aerospace,
Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering, and
Computer Science and Engineering. Postgraduate and doctoral programs are
offered in many interdisciplinary areas including Environmental Science and
Engineering and Energy Systems Engineering. Postgraduate and doctoral programs
are also offered in Geology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics
by the respective Science Departments. Industrial Design Center of the
institute offers a two years masters program (M. Des.) in Industrial Design and
Visual Communications.
All departments of the Institute have
well equipped research laboratories. In addition, there are number of central
facilities which include computer center, central library and photography
sections. A lot of IIT research is funded by agencies like DST, MNES, DRDO,
AEC, ARDB and DOE. Research activities
in the area of Biomass Gasification Process and Technology started in 1984
under the sponsorship of then DNES now MNES. Activities have continued since
then with increasing pace. Current activities at IITB are a part of a national
co-ordinated project called as GARP (Gasifier Action Research Project).
Accordingly, the activities at IITB are named as GARP-IITB.
