Biomass is a location-specific land based resource, essentially suited to the decentralised consumption pattern. Biomass gasification and utilisation for energy purposes is a multi-disciplinary area. Technology is biomass and application specific. Adoption of multi-institutional approach becomes essential to cope with the simultaneous specificity and multiplicity of technical, environmental, management and social issues involved in development and implementation of BGTU. Co-ordination of the activities acquires immense importance in this context. Involving other institutions and agencies to achieve the goals and targets set in consultation with MNES, for the region, is an assigned responsibility of GARP-IITB.
Needs of the region and the strengths and interests of the institutions shall provide the format for the co-ordination work. The task includes generation and preprocessing of projects. Instrumenting interaction with and amongst the regional institutions and implementing agencies is an essential component of the co-ordination work. This center endeavors to provide technical backup to the nodal agencies at the same time get the benefit of the field experiences through directional reciprocity.
Co-ordination duty of the center extends to organisation of interactive forums like conferences, workshops and meetings. GARP-IITB has to its credit organisation of the two National Technical Meets on ‘Advances in Biomass Gasification’ and several short-term courses and meetings.
