OBJECTIVES

The objective of GARP-IITB may be categorised under three different heads: Service objectives, Development objectives and Research objectives.

SERVICE OBJECTIVES

*Technology Assessment

Type Testing of gasifier systems of different types using different biomass materials and for different end-use applications, as per the revised Protocols. Diagnostic studies and Action research towards improved system performance, reliability and cost.

Iterative development of Test Procedures, Methodology and Standards specific to end-uses, biomass materials and gasifier design types.

Standardisation of the procedure and methodology for the measurement of various critical performance parameters: Tar, Particulates etc.

*Technical Backup Services

Scientific and technical backup to the nodal agencies, other implementing agencies and R&D groups in the region. This shall include trouble shooting, failure analysis etc. under field conditions within the assigned region.

*Zonal Co-ordination

Co-ordination of biomass gasification related R&D activities in the states of Maharashtra and Goa. Identification of zonal needs, induction of other institutions of the region in the subject of biomass gasification, generation of projects, pre-processing and review of the projects.

*Interactive Forums (Organisation/Participation)

Participation in and organisation of interactive forums; national and international conferences, technical meetings and discussions etc..

*Manpower Development

Training and manpower development at graduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels, for manning the R&D, D&D and implementation needs of the technology. Organising special, specific to measurement and product needs, training courses, for the officers of the national and nodal agencies, technical staff of the manufacturers and other centers.

DEVELOPMENTAL OBJECTIVES

*Development of Gasification Systems

Design, development, prototyping and proving of biomass-specific and application specific gasification systems for utilisation of the regionally available biomass resources through gasification route. Composite package development for thermal and shaft power applications. Preparation of technology package for transfer and manufacturing. Field demonstration and optimisation of systems.

*Engine Development and Optimisation

Investigations on Dual-fuel engines and S.I. producer-gas engines. Performance studies: % diesel replacement, emissions, power realisation etc.. Optimisation of the design and setting parameters. Retrofit requirements, governing and control.

*Design and Development of combustion systems

Design and development of producer-gas burner systems with application-specific flame geometry, temperature and controls.

*Development and standardisation of special measuring

 apparatus / methodology

Special attention to Tar and Particulates contents in producer-gas, Standardisation of the Tar and Particulates measuring technique specific to gasifier design and the end-use applications.

*Data-base on Biomass Gasification

Collection and compilation of up-to-date global state of art information and dissemination of the same through an interactive web-site and other modes to MNES, State Nodal Agencies and other centers.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

Conservation of conventional energy sources, substituting the same by biomass energy through thermo-chemical conversion processes is the main objective of GARP-IITB. Maximisation of the efficiencies of biomass conversion and utilisation processes and minimisation of the system & operational cost are implied objective and focus of the research undertaken at the center.
