The invention relates to an improved mechanical energy storage and release device comprising of wound energy storing element(s). Common energy storage and release devices s(based on springs) suffer from following drawbacks – low energy density, low operating speed, etc. Our device provides more number of turns of wound energy storing element(s) in the same volume thereby increasing energy density. Yet another object of the invention is to improve mechanical efficiency of the mechanical energy storage and release device. Other objects of the invention include enhancing the operating speed, providing a flat torque curve, use as rechargeable battery etc.
