The finite element method (FEM) has now become a very important tool of engineering analysis. Its versatility is reflected in its popularity among engineers and designers belonging to nearly all the engineering disciplines. The application of FEM in simulating manufacturing processes such as welding, casting, metal forming and machining is ever increasing as reliable process simulations can predict significant outcomes which are otherwise difficult to measure. Our main focus, at present, is to develop reliable process models for various fusion welding processes based on FEM. Major output of such models are weld geometry, weld thermal cycle, and thermo-mechanical stresses for a certain set of process and material parameters. Due to uncertainties ever present in the input parameters needed for such modeling, the concept of inverse modeling is embedded for more reliable and comprehensive process model. Application of neural network for optimization of process parameter in fusion welding is another area of our research interest. We have computational facilities including INTEL FORTRAN Compiler, TECPLOT Graphics Package, and Commercial packages such as ABAQUS and SYSWELD (will be added soon). Our experimental facilties include AC and MFDC (will be added soon) Resistance spot welding machines, AC/DC pulsed GTAW machine, small-scale academic FSW set-up, 50 kN INSTRON Tensile Testing machine.
