The National Society for Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power (NSFMFP) was established in 1973 as a registered professional society to promote advancement and activities in all aspects of Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power in India. The Society was started by Prof. Subir Kar, Mechanical Engineering Department, IIT Bombay. One of the Society's main activities is to conduct the annual Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power (FMFP) Conference at one of the premier institutions in India since its inception. The conference at international level was first organised in 1998 at IIT Delhi along with 25th national conference. Since then, every fourth year national conference is also called as international conference - previous editions held at IIT Roorkee, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and IIT Kanpur. Keeping pace with changing times, the society has recently decided to increase the frequency of international conference to once in two years - starting the biannual international conference at MNNIT Allahabad in 2016 and followed by IIT Bombay in 2018. The aim of the conference is to bring together national and international experts on a common platform and share the state of the art on various topics related to fluid mechanics and fluid power.
To expand its activities further, the society decided to organize national workshop on research methodology in fluid mechanics - organized for the first time at MNNIT Allahabad in 2013, followed by NITK Surathkal in 2014, Amrita University in 2016, and PSG Coimbatore in 2018. The objective is to disseminate and propagate knowledge in the fields of fluid Mechanics in the country and to play a lead role in training the young faculty members and research scholars who desire to join teaching in future. This need was specially felt, due to the introduction of numerous undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (in mechanical, civil, chemical, aerospace) at various engineering institutes in India. This training is aimed to enable them to adopt right approach while teaching these subjects as well as enable to inculcate the research interest at both UG and PG levels. The workshop offers a methodical approach to build an insight for research in fluid mechanics.
