In the year 2005, Prof. Atrey joined IIT Bombay as Associate Professor. He became a full Professor in 2009, and Institute Chair Professor in 2017. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE), Fellow of Indian Cryogenics Council (FICC) and also the Founding Chair of the Process Industries Division of IMechE, UK. Currently, he is the President of Indian Cryogenics Council. He is the member of International Cryogenic Engineering Committee (ICEC) and also serves as the member of International editorial advisory board of the Journal-Cryogenics.
Prof. Atrey is the recipient of various awards namely, the Prof Sukhatme Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Dr Patwardhan Technology development award, the Industrial Impact award. He has been entrusted with various projects related to Defence, Space, and Atomic Energy applications. His current area of research is Heat Exchangers, Cryocoolers, Cryosurgery, Heat Pipe, and Superconducting Devices
