Design Engineering

Mechanical Engineers are often expected to have the ability to analyse and design systems based on the ability to predict the motion and/or deformation of rigid bodies and deformable distributed mass systems. The Design Engineering stream at IIT Bombay is aimed at providing students exposure, at various levels, to build such ability in themselves. The stream is organized into sub-steams termed as Solid Mechanics and Dynamics & Controls.

The Solid Mechanics sub-stream deals with the study of behaviour of materials and prediction of their deformation when subject to external forces, temperature changes, etc. This understanding forms the core of the considerations involved in the design of components of machinery used in a large number of applications from automotive to aerospace to milli/micro-scale systems. For postgraduate students, this sub-stream attempts to provide links to other branches of continuum mechanics including fluid mechanics.

The Dynamics & Controls sub-stream deals with the prediction and control of the motion of rigid bodies and at times deformable distributed mass systems. Understanding of dynamics of rigid body systems and feedback control ideas are often crucial towards the design of modern-day mechanically simpler, intelligent, electronically-controlled systems for a wide variety of applications. For postgraduate students, this sub-stream attempts to provide links to systems/control theory, robotics, mechanism design, vibration and acoustics.
