Manufacturing Engineering

Product development activities worldwide are facing several challenges due to stringent demands on product quality, reliability and productivity. Globalization has added a new dimension to this scenario, needing interoperability between distributed cyber physical systems. To meet these challenges, manufacturing engineers are focusing on research and development activities on Processes, Automation and Systems. Work on processes deals with traditional and non-traditional (EDM, ECM, Laser) processes, Micro / Nano fabrication, additive and net shape manufacturing. Understanding properties and behavior for a variety of materials, therefore, becomes highly essential. The  CAD/CAM/CIM techniques focus on the automation and integration of product cycle activities such as design, analysis, planning, production and inspection to compress product development lead time. Work on manufacturing systems use the techniques of IEOR to plan, model and optimize systems, addressing the issues of supply chain, logistics and resource utilization. Today Product Design for Sustainability / durability dealing with material and product structure interaction have become major issues worldwide. Of late, techniques of AI and Machine Learning are being applied to develop intelligent product development environments.Contemporary Manufacturing Engineering integrates multi-disciplinary concepts from Computational Science, Material Science, Mechanics, Thermal Science, Artificial Intelligence, Optimization and Data Science for a complete Product Development from inception through in-service.
