Postdoctoral Positions

Join our team as a postdoctoral researcher. Cadidates with a background in Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Materials will be preferred.

Current Opportunities

We currently do not have any openings for postdoc position in our lab through the IITB Institute Postdoctoral Scheme. However, you are encouraged to apply through the National Postdoc Fellowship Scheme. Please apply only if your PhD reserach falls in the following areas:

  • Femtosecond Laser Processing
  • Computational modeling of laser-material interactions
  • Pulsed Laser surface engineering
  • Pulsed Laser Microfabrication

Candidates should have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field, with a strong publication record and demonstrated expertise in experimental or computational research.

How to Apply

Please send your CV, research statement, and contact information for two references to Prof. Deepak Marla at dmarla@iitb.ac.in. In your email subject line, please include "Postdoc Application - [Your Name]". We may not be able to reply to every email. If there is no respone, please understand that we are not interested in your application.

PhD Opportunities

Pursue doctoral research in advanced laser manufacturing

Research Areas

We offer PhD positions for motivated students interested in:

  • Multi-physics modeling of laser-material interactions
  • Laser microfabrication and nano-manufacturing
  • Optimization of laser manufacturing processes
  • Innovative laser-based techniques for surface modification
  • AI and machine learning applications in laser processing

Admissions

PhD admissions at IIT Bombay happen twice a year. Candidates must apply through the official IIT Bombay application portal and qualify for the interview process. We encourage prospective students to explore both regular PhD positions and sponsored industry fellowships.

If you are interested in joining our lab as a PhD student, we recommend contacting Prof. Marla before applying to discuss potential research topics and opportunities.

Masters Students

Opportunities for M.Tech projects and research

Project Opportunities

We welcome M.Tech students from IIT Bombay and other institutes for thesis projects and research internships. Current project areas include:

  • Experimental studies on femtosecond laser cutting and welding
  • Thermal analysis of laser-based manufacturing processes
  • AI-ML based optimization for laser materials processing
  • Multi-physics modeling and simulation in laser processing

Requirements

Masters students should have a strong background in mechanical engineering, materials science, or related fields. Programming skills in MATLAB or Python, and an experience

IIT Bombay students can directly approach Prof. Marla to discuss potential projects. External students should apply through their institution's internship or exchange program coordinators.

Internship Opportunities

Short-term research experiences for undergraduate and graduate students

Available Internships

We offer internships throughout the year for motivated undergraduate and graduate students. Internships typically last 2-6 months and provide valuable hands-on experience in experimental or computational research.

You are are also encouraged to apply through IRCC Research Internship Scheme. For more information, click on the tab given on the right side.

Current internship projects include:

  • Data analysis for laser processing parameters
  • Experimental characterization of laser-processed materials
  • Computer vision for process monitoring
  • Finite element modeling of thermal processes
  • Literature reviews and technical writing assistance

Application Process

Internship applications are accepted on a rolling basis. To apply, please send the following documents to dmarla@iitb.ac.in with the subject line "Internship Application - [Your Name]":

  • CV or resume
  • Brief statement of interest (1 page maximum)
  • Academic transcripts
